Lost in translation

blog post about the translation issuesomething about the Far East, travelling to both HK and Tokyomeeting peopletalking about the brandand the problem of translationthe strength in our brand position is a focus on Western literaturethe power of the shirt/graphic is the bigger idea that it references rather than the graphic itselftake away this reference point, and a good deal (but not all) of the ‘power’ of the graphic is lostand this is exactly what happened in the interestingly the jesus one seemed to go down best, as its an idea that doesn’t rely on another idea (i.e. there is no book / author / bigger idea there).did get a massive sense though that we’re gonna have to get our stories translated into japanese/chinese/whatever to really make this brand fly…. swingtags are also a biggie – again sixpaxk have a seriously cool one that folds up into their logo, origami-styles, and obv this has a lot of traction in japan.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – v2

There’s a very fine line between inspiration and all-out robbery. In this case we’re more than happy to have been the inspiration, its only a shame that the end result is a poor approximation.

NEW – inside neck prints

Batch.03 sees the introduction of a new feature across our range, inside neck-prints. Previously we only had a quote from Orwell on the inside neck of Miniluv. It added so much to the experience and symbolism of the shirt that we decided it just made sense to apply it to every shirt we produce. So [...]

Batch.03 drops!

It’s been a few weeks now but I just realised that some of you may not have seen them the 2 new designs we just launched. This time around, we’ve brought one of Sartre’s existentialist dilemmas to life in a design called “L’Enfer c’est les autres” (right). And we’ve issued a call to arms to [...]

Finished is not in our vocabulary…

Here at the-affair, we’re never truly happy. Although we sell the best quality product we can source, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve it. It doesn’t make the previous t-shirts inferior, it just makes the new ones we’re about to drop that much closer to the ideal we’ve got in our heads. We’ve just [...]

FWA Site of the Day

Guess what? We’ve won the FWA!!!! If you don’t already know, its the premier global website award, and its a real honour – especially as we don’t quite have the same budget as a global car brand. Thanks again to our resident Flash guru Kamil Gottwald for making it all happen. And if you’re in [...]

Batch.02 is live!

It’s been a wild and intense 6 months since we launched this affair. In that time, we’ve been boring countless people at dinner parties with tales of our exploits, as well as posting our tees off to exotic and unexpected destinations. Tempers were frayed, sanity was threatened, calls from friends and concerned family members went [...]

batch.02 dropping early feb

Last week we were up at 5th Column with Spike printing our 3x new shirts. We’re calling these ‘batch.02′ and they’ll be dropping early feb, along with 2x hoodies in different colourways. Its certainly been an interesting process the second-time around. With strong demand for the previous 2x designs, and Miniluv in general, we easily [...]

Muslim Jesus dissected

Anyone interested in the exactly how the Muslim Jesus shirt was created should head on down to the October session of the LFPUG. We’ll be giving a talk about the system we wrote in Flash that created the illustration and about how we got exactly the right play between the image of Jesus and the Muslim crescents that create him.

Packaging

OK so packaging might not be the top-most thing to think about when starting a tee brand, but it was something we decided to look into as a point of differentiation… Everyone’s received a generic brown envelope in the mail, with a tee folded in a generic way and wrapped in generic plastic.

Trust me, I’m all over it ;) I’m just trying to find the time to do it. In the meantime, check out the proposed design above.

Testbed…

Eventually I’d like to use this space as a test bed for all new designs. And with your feedback we can ensure we’re always providing you with what you want :)
