Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was born on this day in 1903. He died tragically young at only 46 years old, quite literally broken by his greatest work, the prescient dystopian classic ‘
1984’.
He left an indelible mark not only on literature but more importantly on the general zeitgeist. Though Orwell is long dead, his final novel ensures that he is very much alive today.
To celebrate his birthday we’ve compiled a few GIFs of things that Orwell wrote about as fiction that have come true. We do this because ‘1984’ is one of our favourite books of all time and we want to celebrate the world of Winston Smith and Airstrip One.
But we also do this because ‘1984’ wasn't supposed to be an instruction manual. Think of these GIFs as our clarion call to remain vigilant and fight against the constant dilution of our fundamental human right to privacy.
